High Quality Treatment of Optical Fiber End Face by Laser Polishing Technique

The laser technology has been advancing rapidly. Recently it has been widely used for material machining and processing, medical surgery, and precise measurement. Especially in the laser processing field, high-power and high-quality lasers tend to be mainly used.
In this paper, we report on the high quality treatment technique of the optical fiber end face for improving damage resistance that is strongly required for high power laser delivery.
By using the laser polishing technique, we confirmed that the polishing time was dramatically shortened by 1 /100, and the damage resistance of optical fiber end face increased by 1.3 times compared to the conventional mechanical polishing technique. Furthermore,
we adopted this unique technique for a air-hole type optical fiber, and achieved simultaneous processing of sealing and polishing on the optical fiber end face.

Development of Periodically-thickened Rectangular Copper Wire for Motor Products with Constant Cross-sectional Area

Rectangular wire has been widely used in various electrical and electronic components that require miniaturization or higher performance, because it has the advantage of being able to increase the lamination factor (the ratio of cross-sectional area of conductor to that of whole coil) than round wire.
Since there has been a strong demand for high performance especially regarding motors, we have established the 2 -pass rolling method to produce the periodically-thickened rectangular copper wire with constant cross-sectional area. The wire makes it possible to utilize the space in stator core for motors, thus improving the performance of motors.

High Performance Modification of a Flame Retardant Tape for Cables
-A Flame Retardant Tape with Three Times Long Life Comparing Previous Product-

Phosphorus-based flame retardant and plasticizer are applied to current flame retardant tape used for disaster measures to achieve higher flame resistance. However these ingredients give relatively shorter durability, and the product life under actual environment is
specified as 20 years. Recently, power cables have been often used for longer period than designed life time, and the flame retardant tape used with the power cable is strongly expected to have longer life time. Under this requirement, various compounds were
studied to prolong the life time, and finally the flame retardant tape that has a life span three times longer than the current tape, together with excellent flame resistance, was developed.

Development of Halogen-free Wire Covering Materials by Quality Engineering

Recently, because public concern about environmental issues is growing, halogen-free wire covering materials are used as substitute for polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Additionally, in the light of energy saving and electric power saving, device downsizing and weight saving are required in many fields, so we had to develop small diameter electric wire and cable. However, halogen-free wire covering materials include a lot of flame retardant. Therefore, these materials had problems about less abrasion resistance. Hence, we needed to find out optimization match-up for materials. Thus, we developed new halogen-free wire covering materials with the use of Quality Engineering.
We found that the materials developed by Quality Engineering are useful. As a result, we developed new halogen-free wire covering materials for small diameter electric wire and cable.
