Development of Square Magnet Wires "MEXCEL®"

Recently, in response to demands for smaller and more efficient electronic devices, rectangular wires are used in them for improving the coil space factor. Square wires can also raise the efficiency by applying the maximum space factor. For increasing the space factor of the coils, a uniform cross section of the wire and its insulation thickness are very important. Mitsubishi Cable Industries has a unique electro-deposition insulation technique that has many advantages compared to conventional insulation dipping. The square wires can be insulated very uniformly by this electro-deposition insulation technique. In this report, we introduce the development of the electro- deposition insulated square wires.

Development of "SUNLIMES® III"
- Application to Unplated Metal Seals for UHV use -

Recently, requirements for seals that are used in vacuum and semiconductor industries have become more severe with the progress of high performance apparatuses. Rubber and resin seals can no longer meet all customers purposes, so metal seals have been required to replace these seals. However, this has not been easy because metal seals require high compression torque and delicate handling. Mitsubishi Cable Industries has developed the SUNLIMES series to solve these problems and offer solutions for the above requirements. In this report, some of the latest examples of application of SUNLIMES III in Ultra High Vacuum use are introduced.

Adjusting the Interrogation Area of the UHF RFID with Electromagnetic Wave Absorbers

UHF RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) systems operating in the 860 to 960 MHz band can read/write a large number of IC tags at the same time and have a wider interrogation area than other previous systems. They are expected to be applied to SCM (Supply Chain Management) in various field such as logistics, manufacturing and retail. However, interference with neighboring systems and/or multipath radio waves from surroundings may occur as the propagation area of their radio waves are so wide. In this report, we describe the experimental results on adjusting the electromagnetic environment with electromagnetic wave absorbers.

A New O-ring Material for Hydraulic Fluids in Aircrafts (NAS 1613 )
- Qualification Approved by Boeing -

Severe requirements were added in the updated NAS 1613 (Rev.5 ) specifications for hydraulic fluids used in aircrafts. Two kinds of Phosphate ester hydraulic fluids were added and compound classification was abolished. In addition, Boeing certifies compounds that pass their own functional test. Mitsubishi cable Industries has developed a new compound that satisfies both the NAS 1613 specification and the Boeing certification test. The compound has been registered in the Qualified Products List by Boeing (Compound No. 2152 -80 ).

Development of Rubber Membrane Instruments for Air Diffusers in Sewage Treatment Plants

A role of a sewage treatment is to keep the water in good condition by purifying filthy water such as domestic or industrial liquid wastes. As the main method of purification, the activated sludge method that decomposes and absorbs pollutant by microbes is used. To activate microbes, aeration by sending air bubbles into the processing water is necessary. Electricity needed for aeration takes up most of the total electricity consumption for the treatment, and the most electricity consuming is the blower. Therefore, development of an air diffuser with improved oxygen transfer efficiency is an important factor for reducing electricity consumption.
We developed rubber membrane instruments for air diffusers that have higher oxygen transfer efficiency than porous resin panel diffusers by joint development with DAICEN MEMBRANE-SYSTEMS LTD.

PTFE Radial Lip Seals for Vacuum Pumps and Compressors

As rotary shaft seals for dry vacuum pumps and compressors, rubber oil seals and mechanical seals have been used. However, because of demands for higher-performance, diversification of recent pumps and compressors, polytetrafluoroethylen (PTFE) radial lip seals are being used instead.
PTFE has superior heat resistance, chemical stability, low abrasion, and moderate elasticity. Therefore, the PTFE radial lip seal is simple in structure but has higher reliability than oil or mechanical seals. In this report, we introduce applications of the PTFE radial lip seals in dry vacuum pumps and compressors.

Yb-doped Air-hole Type Double Cladding Fiber Laser with HR coating

Recently, research and development of rare earth doped double cladding fiber lasers for industrial welding and other applications are in progress. Compared with the conventional double cladding fiber with polymer cladding, the air hole type double cladding fiber in which the pumping guide is surrounded by microstructured air holes has advantages such as having a high numerical aperture (NA) and suppressing skew rays, which does not contribute to core excitation.
We propose a new fiber laser configuration which consists of an Yb-doped air hole type double cladding fiber and a wavelength selective filter (900 nm transmission / 1000 nm reflection) directly deposited on one fiber end. Laser output power of 300 W and slope efficiency of 74% against the output power of pumping LD are achieved.
The laser resonator, which consists of a high-reflection (HR) coating directly deposited on one fiber end and the other flat polished end requires no mirrors and simplifies the laser configuration.

Development of Harness Jointers

As automobiles are becoming equipped with more and more electronic devices, larger and upsized wire harnesses have also become necessary. The circuit branch is an essential part for assembling a wire harness. At present, there are two types of circuit branches; one directly connects the electric wires, as in splice joints or supersonic wave welding, and the other uses a connector, as in joint connectors used for circuit branching. Both have merits and demerits, but the mutual problems of both types are that they have unreliable contact, low harness productivity and are heavy.
Based on such a background, we have developed a connection part for a microminiature circuit branch. Adopting a new connection method adapted from our FFC® junction box; this method inserts the through pin molded by a forging press in to the receiving terminal that has a cylinder contact point and can be incorporated into the harness. Therefore, the circuit branching can be done on the harness assembling line. The wire harnesses are highly reliable, has improved productivity and can be assembled to the vehicle more easily.
